1982 AC 3000 ME
Single Notable Owner from New
Just 25,000 Miles from New
Thames Ditton-Built Example
Although first proposed in 1974, AC’s striking mid-engined coupé—the 3000ME—did not enter production until 1979. Seeking to diversify with a smaller, more accessible sports car, AC Chairman Derek Hurlock acquired the rights to the Bohanna-Stables–designed Diablo prototype, first displayed at the 1973 Olympia Racing Car Show. By the time production commenced, the original Austin Maxi powertrain had been replaced by a transverse-mounted 3.0-litre Ford Essex V6 engine paired with AC’s own five-speed gearbox. Approximatley 70 cars were built at AC’s historic Thames Ditton works.
We are honoured to present this 1981 AC 3000ME, the final car from the renowned Peter Rampton collection. A close friend of Derek Hurlock, Mr Rampton was a noted collector of narrow gauge railway locomotives and a highly respected AC connoisseur. Among his collection were several significant AC cars, including a Greyhound and an Aceca. of which he acquired the greyhound from new. This 3000ME was the last car ordered, delivered, and cherished by Mr Rampton.
Supplied new and invoiced on 28th July 1981 at a cost of £11,597.29, this example was finished in Princess Blue to match his Greyhound, and features beige leather upholstery, complementary carpeting, and a factory-fitted radio cassette player. As with all of Mr Rampton’s vehicles, this 3000ME has been maintained to the highest standard, benefiting from a complete and fully documented service history from new. Initially maintained by the AC factory and subsequently entrusted to marque specialists following its closure, the car remains in wonderful condition.
The documentation accompanying this sale is remarkable and rarely encountered in such completeness. Included are the original AC sales invoice, factory warranty certificate, Ford engine guarantee slip, and the original radio cassette instruction manual—an outstanding archival package.
Having covered just 25,000 miles from new and never having changed hands, this is an unrepeatable opportunity to acquire a beautifully preserved, Thames Ditton-built AC 3000ME with exceptional provenance and single-ownership history. We warmly invite prospective purchasers to arrange a viewing to fully appreciate the rarity and quality of this collector-grade example.
