First seen at the 1959 London Motor Show, the AC Greyhound was conceived as a four-seat Grand Tourer offering the sporting qualities of the Ace and Aceca with considerably greater passenger accommodation.
AC themselves advertised the new model with the question:
“May we have a 4-seater sports saloon with the qualities and performance of the AC Aceca?”
The answer was the Greyhound.
Although closely related in appearance to the Aceca, beneath the aluminium coachwork the Greyhound was substantially different. Its longer chassis employed rectangular-section tubes for increased rigidity, together with independent coil-spring suspension all round and rack-and-pinion steering derived from the 1958 Le Mans Ace.
A total of 84 Greyhounds were constructed between 1959 and 1963. Bristol power predominated, with 46 cars receiving the 100D2 engine and a further 22 fitted with the later 110-series unit.
BEF 2564
This particular right-hand-drive Greyhound, BEF 2564, dates from the final year of production in 1963 and was originally specified in Black coachwork with Red trim.
The car spent more than four decades with a longstanding AC Owners’ Club member who was closely involved with the marque as the Club’s 2.6 Ace and Aceca Registrar.
Acquired in the early 1980s as essentially a rolling restoration project, BEF 2564 subsequently underwent an extensive programme of restoration and improvement.
Work commenced in 1982, when the car was substantially dismantled. The floors and inner wings were removed and the chassis treated and painted. Further work by a marque specialist included the fabrication of new sills and a bare-metal repaint in Verte metallic, the colour in which the car presents today.
The 2.2-litre Bristol 110-series six-cylinder engine was comprehensively rebuilt by a marque specialist in 2013, including Cosworth pistons, new valve guides and seats, a new camshaft and followers and a reground crankshaft.
Further improvements include a high-torque starter motor, spin-on oil-filter conversion, re-cored radiator, thermostatically controlled electric cooling fan, brake servo, Boyer Bransden ignition spark amplifier, Weber carburettors with Malpassi filtration and twin Burlen SU fuel pumps.
The brightwork has been re-chromed and the car sits on five MWS 15-inch wheels fitted with Vredestein tyres. More recently, new Leda rear dampers and springs were fitted in July 2025.
Inside, the Greyhound has been retrimmed in black leather with grey carpeting. The dashboard has been re-veneered and incorporates a leather-covered top roll, complemented by a traditional wood-rim steering wheel.
The quality of the restoration was recognised in 2017, when BEF 2564 was awarded the Hurlock Cup for Overall Champion Car at the AC Owners’ Club Concours d’Elegance. The car is also featured in Rinsey Mills’ respected AC Six-Cylinder Sports Cars in Detail.
BEF 2564 is accompanied by two substantial history files, containing correspondence, photographs and invoices covering its restoration and subsequent maintenance, with documentation dating back to 1966.
A particularly attractive example of AC’s sophisticated four-seat Grand Tourer, combining long-term knowledgeable ownership, Bristol 110-series power and recognised AC Owners’ Club concours success.
